2022 August Mailer (part 1)
See below
Sent August 11th
Hey Band,
We are exactly one month away from band camp starting! This is the first mailer of August, and the others are archived here. If you joined since the last one, or this is the first one of these you're receiving, please go back and read the others. There will be another mailer this month that narrows in on camp and talks Rhythm and Beavs stuff, be on the lookout!
Before we get going, a reminder that students moving into their dorms early don’t need to fill out paperwork with UDHS directly, we will get that done for you this week. Nicole has been working hard on that. For now though, there's a bunch to go over:
Advance Music and Packets
The 2022 Memorization Packets for brass and woodwinds are up and running! They can be found in the Member Resources Folder. That's a folder that you can always go to for materials throughout the season. We'll dump show music in there, along with drill, recordings, reference video, etc.
We ask that students arrive at camp with the pieces in the packet committed to memory. Those five traditionals are key parts of the folder, and having them already worked through helps us move into the yearly stuff much more quickly. While we do not have auditions for wind players in the OSUMB, we do have part hearing on Monday of camp to split up parts for the season. This year the part hearing piece is Fly As Me by Silksonic, from the first halftime show. All of that is available folder, but specific links are below:

Concert Ensemble Auditions
If you are intend to play in the concert band program this year, audition information is up and active on the music department's website! We are keeping the video audition format from last year, as it's proven easier for all parties involved. If you've never auditioned before, there are three primary concert band ensembles at OSU:
Wind Ensemble (auditioned)
Directed by Dr. Leung
Tue/Thu 12-2pm
One-per-part ensemble
Challenging and rewarding repertoire, often new music
Wind Symphony (auditioned)
Directed by me
Mon/Wed 2-4pm
Traditionally larger group, sometimes multiple per part
Focuses on the classics and emerging standards
Campus Band (non-auditioned)
Directed by Dr. Leung
Tue 7pm
Important: Submit your audition videos before band camp begins. The deadline is Sept 17th, right at the end of camp. Don't put it off until during camp.
Away Schedule
As always, travel is where things are the most up in the air right now. There's a new Pac12 policy that's making full-band trips harder than they used to be. We are currently committed to a trip to Washington on November 4th with a two-bus band, and potentially (depending on how money shakes out) a smaller air trip to Utah in early October.
Of course we will also be "travelling" up to Portland for our game again MSU at Providence Park on Sept 17th.
Leadership Phone Calls
Starting next week, everyone will be receiving calls from one of their section leaders. The purpose of these phone calls is to confirm attendance and roster for the season, answer any questions you may have, and make sure everyone is up to speed and ready to go for camp. Please be ready to answer a number that you may not have in your phone. These are incredibly important for solidifying everything, ensuring instrument availability, and making sure we have all dots covered for the first shows.
That’s it for now, be on the lookout for one last camp info email later this month about R&B and other things, and one final last-minute camp-checklist in early September.
Go Beavs,
-Hannum
